Nutrition guide
You do not need to give up roti, daal or your family's cooking to lose weight, wherever in the world you live. This guide shows how to lose fat while eating normal desi food.
Fat loss comes down to eating slightly fewer calories than your body uses, every day, for long enough. No single food makes you fat and no single food burns fat. What matters is the total.
| Instead of | Try | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| Paratha | Plain chapati / roti | Same wheat, far less ghee |
| Oily karahi or curry | The same dish made with 1 to 2 tbsp oil | Cuts hundreds of calories per pot |
| Two plates of rice | One portion of rice with extra salad | Same meal, smaller portion |
| Sweet lassi or mango lassi | Plain lassi or chaas | Protein without the sugar |
| Samosa / pakora snack | Roasted chana or fruit chaat | More fibre, much less fat |
| Chai with 2 sugars | Chai with no or less sugar | Several cups a day adds up |
This is an example for an average adult aiming to lose weight. Your own plan depends on your size, activity and goal.

Yes. A plain chapati is a reasonable carbohydrate source. What matters is how many you eat and what you eat them with. Most people lose weight while eating 2 to 4 chapatis a day as part of a planned calorie target.
No. Rice is not fattening on its own. Large portions and oily biryani are the problem. A measured portion of rice with protein and vegetables fits into a weight loss diet.
A sustainable rate is about 0.5 to 1 kg (1 to 2 lb) per week, so roughly 2 to 4 kg per month. People with more weight to lose often drop faster in the first weeks.
No. Supplements are optional. A good diet plan using normal desi food, enough protein and consistent training does the work. Whey protein can be convenient but is not required.
